Asphalt patching involves removing the damaged section of asphalt and replacing it with new material on the existing sub-base or sub-grade. An overlay, by contrast, adds a fresh layer of asphalt directly over the old, worn surface without removing it.

Most asphalt deterioration begins with a single crack that gradually spreads. Exposed cracks allow moisture to seep beneath the surface, compromising the integrity of the sub-base. The more water that penetrates, the greater the risk of widespread surface damage and costly repairs.

Asphalt can deteriorate due to factors both above and below the surface. A well-designed and properly constructed pavement resists these forces better. During installation, the sub-base should be made of suitable rock and compacted correctly. The asphalt mix must retain sufficient heat (above 200°F) before compaction, and proper equipment should be used to ensure density.

Above-surface factors include:

  • Rainfall and freeze-thaw cycles
  • Snow and ice
  • Foreign substances like sand, salt, oil, or gas leaks
  • Sun exposure and oxidation
  • Heavy vehicles or equipment
